Start by preventing a bigger leak
If the drum is full of water, stop the program and switch the machine off. Do not force open a front-loader door: the lock is keeping that water off your floor. Put towels and a shallow tray near the filter access, and unplug the appliance before touching a removable filter.
A burning smell, visible smoke, repeated electrical tripping or water near a power point is not a DIY-check situation. Isolate power only if it is safe and arrange service. If water is escaping quickly, turn off the washing-machine taps as well.
Checks that do not require dismantling
First confirm the selected cycle has reached its drain stage. A rinse-hold option, an unbalanced load or a paused program can leave water in the drum by design. Try the model’s drain or spin-and-drain program once. If you hear only a hum, stop rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Check the external drain hose for a kink or crushing behind the cabinet. If the hose empties into a laundry sink, inspect the sink connection for a blockage. Follow the user manual before opening a pump filter; trapped water can discharge quickly, and some models do not provide user access.
- Remove coins, lint and small items only from user-accessible filters

What a technician may need to test
When the simple water path is clear, the cause may be a jammed or electrically failed drain pump, damaged wiring, a pressure-sensing fault, a door-lock issue or a control-board problem. A machine can also report drainage trouble when it fills too slowly or cannot confirm the water level.
Diagnosis matters because replacing a pump will not fix a blocked pressure chamber or a board that never supplies the pump. Useful information for your booking
Tell the booking team whether the machine is a front-loader, top-loader or washer-dryer, what happened immediately before the fault, and whether any water escaped. A clear photo of the rating plate and display can prevent confusion between similar models.
