Dryer Overheating: Warning Signs and Airflow Checks

Long cycles, very hot laundry or a burning smell are reasons to pause. Airflow is the first check, but sensors and heaters can also be responsible.

Know when to stop the dryer

Stop immediately if you see smoke, smell burning, hear scraping, or find the cabinet abnormally hot. Unplug it if safe and do not restart it to see whether the symptom returns. Lint and heat make continued testing risky.

Warm laundry and a warm cabinet can be normal, particularly near the end of some programs. A change from normal performance—longer cycles, hotter loads, shutdowns or heat with no drum movement—is the stronger warning.

Restore only user-serviceable airflow

Clean the lint filter after each load and inspect it against the light. Fabric-softener residue can restrict a filter that looks clear; clean it only as the manufacturer instructs. On condenser or heat-pump models, maintain accessible heat-exchanger and secondary filters according to the manual.

For a vented dryer, check that the external outlet is unobstructed and that the approved duct is not crushed. Do not operate a dryer with guards, filters or ducting removed. Avoid overloading, because a packed drum reduces tumbling and airflow.

  • Lint filter blocked or coated
  • Condenser or heat-exchanger path needs approved cleaning
  • Vent duct crushed, too long or obstructed
  • Load too large for air to circulate

When airflow is not the whole story

Thermistors, thermostats, heater relays, fans and control boards regulate heat. A drum that turns slowly or stops can leave one area exposed to heat. Heat-pump dryers add refrigeration sensors, pumps and compressors to the diagnostic path.

Repeatedly resetting an overheat cut-out without correcting the cause defeats a safety warning. EPL tests the airflow and controls as a system and uses manufacturer information for the model.
