Food safety comes before troubleshooting
Move vulnerable food to a working fridge, freezer or ice-filled esky if cabinet temperature has risen. NSW Food Authority guidance should be followed for potentially hazardous food; when its time and temperature history is uncertain, take the cautious option.
Keep the doors closed while making arrangements. Repeatedly opening the cabinet to see whether it feels colder slows recovery and makes diagnosis less clear. If there is a burning smell, damaged cord or repeated power tripping, unplug only if safe and stop using the appliance.
Quick observations that help
Confirm the power point works and that the display has not been placed in holiday, showroom or cooling-off mode. Check temperature settings against the manual. Make sure food packages do not block internal vents and that the door closes against the seal all the way around.
Listen for fans and compressor operation, but do not remove covers. Note whether the freezer is still cold, whether a thick frost layer is visible on an internal rear panel, and whether the compressor seems to start and stop repeatedly. Those clues help narrow the system involved.
- Fridge warm, freezer cold: airflow or defrost faults are possible
- Both compartments warm: power, control or refrigeration faults are possible
- Heavy frost: a defrost, sensor, fan or door-sealing issue may be involved
- Water under crispers: inspect user-accessible drainage guidance in the manual
Why switching it off and on is not a diagnosis
A restart may clear a temporary control state but cannot repair a failed fan, thermistor, defrost component, inverter board or sealed refrigeration system. After unplugging, compressors also need time for system pressures to equalise; rapid repeated restarts can be unhelpful.
Do not chip ice with tools or apply high heat inside the cabinet. Puncturing a refrigerant line can make a repair far more serious. A technician can compare sensor readings, inspect airflow and test the compressor system with the correct equipment.
Prepare for an efficient service visit
Record actual temperatures if you have a fridge thermometer, when the problem began, unusual noises and any error code. Photograph the rating plate—often inside the fresh-food compartment—and describe whether the appliance is freestanding or integrated.

Important safety note
This guide provides general information, not a model-specific diagnosis. Stop using an appliance that is leaking, smoking, overheating, tripping power or smells of gas or burning. Follow the manufacturer’s manual and emergency guidance.
