Some water at the end is normal
Modern dishwashers use several drying methods: residual heat from the final rinse, an exposed or concealed heater, a fan, automatic door opening, or mineral-assisted drying on selected models. Plastic does not retain heat like ceramic and glass, so containers may remain beaded with water even when the system is working.
The useful question is whether performance has changed. If plates are hot and mostly dry but plastics are wet, the machine may be operating normally. If every item is cold, the detergent is not dissolving, or cycles end early with an error, a heating or circulation fault is more likely.
Improve drying without opening the appliance
Use a program with a complete heated final rinse rather than a short or eco variant when dry results matter. Check the manual’s rinse-aid setting and refill the reservoir if indicated. Rinse aid changes the surface tension of water; it is not simply an extra detergent.
Load cups so water can run off, avoid nesting bowls, and make sure tall items do not prevent a spray arm from turning. At cycle end, follow the manufacturer’s guidance about opening the door. Some machines are designed to release steam automatically, while others benefit from a short wait.
- Clear food debris from the user-cleanable filter
- Use fresh detergent intended for automatic dishwashers
- Check that the hot-water supply is available where the model requires it
- Do not block door vents or automatic-opening mechanisms
Faults behind persistently cold dishes
A failed heater is one possibility, but technicians also check the circulation pump, temperature sensor, water level, wiring and control electronics. If the dishwasher cannot circulate enough water, it may protect the heater by not energising it. A drying fan or vent actuator can also fail on models that use them.
Avoid measuring internal live components or bypassing a door switch. Dishwashers combine mains electricity, water and sharp cabinet edges. When it is time to arrange service
Book diagnosis if the dishwasher remains cold on appropriate programs, trips power, smells hot, displays a persistent code, or has suddenly lost drying performance. Also stop using it if water leaks from the door or base.
