Repair or Replace? A Practical Appliance Decision Guide

Age matters, but so do the fault, installation, parts support and the value of the appliance already fitted to your home.

Diagnose before comparing

A symptom is not a repair estimate. A dishwasher that will not start might have a simple latch issue or a major electronic fault. Comparing a replacement price to an imagined worst-case repair can lead to needless disposal; assuming every fault is cheap can do the opposite.

A proper diagnosis identifies the failed part, any underlying cause, parts availability and the condition of the rest of the appliance. Ask for the repair option before deciding.

Factors more useful than age alone

Consider service history, overall condition, known parts support and whether the appliance meets your needs. Premium and integrated products can be expensive to replace because cabinetry, stone, ventilation, plumbing or electrical work may also change.

For a repeatedly failing low-value appliance with poor parts support, replacement may be sensible. For a well-maintained machine with one serviceable component failure, repair can preserve years of use and avoid unnecessary waste.

  • Confirmed repair scope and warranty
  • Availability and lead time of genuine parts
  • Installation and disposal costs of replacement
  • Water and energy performance in your actual usage
  • Safety, reliability and previous repair history

Beware simple percentage rules

Rules such as replacing whenever a repair exceeds a fixed percentage of purchase price ignore installation and current replacement quality. They also treat a two-year-old freestanding dishwasher like a twelve-year-old integrated refrigerator.

Use the diagnosed repair cost as one input, not the entire decision. Ask what is covered, whether other wear is visible and what a truly comparable replacement would cost installed.

How EPL approaches the conversation

EPL explains the fault and repair option after testing. If parts are unavailable, the appliance is unsafe or the repair is unlikely to be economical, we say so. Manufacturer relationships can improve access to accurate parts information for our 21 authorised brands.

Phone and online quotes are free, but they cannot replace diagnosis where the cause is uncertain. Service call fees apply to on-site visits. No responsible repairer can promise every repair is worthwhile before inspecting the appliance.

Important safety note

This guide provides general information, not a model-specific diagnosis. Stop using an appliance that is leaking, smoking, overheating, tripping power or smells of gas or burning. Follow the manufacturer’s manual and emergency guidance.

Repair or Replace? A Practical Appliance Decision Guide FAQs

Is an old appliance always inefficient to keep?

No. Efficiency varies by model, condition and usage. Compare verified consumption and full replacement costs rather than assuming from age alone.

Will EPL tell me if repair is not economical?

Yes. After diagnosis we explain the repair scope, parts situation and relevant condition so you can make an informed decision.

Can I get a repair price without a visit?

Phone and online quotes are free, but many symptoms have several causes. A firm repair option may require an on-site diagnosis, for which a service call fee applies.
