Describe the sound and when it happens
A loose filter often rattles as soon as airflow starts. A scraping or grinding sound may follow fan-wheel damage or motor wear. A deep drone that changes with speed can come from vibration transferring into cabinetry or ducting.
Remote-motor systems can carry sound through rigid ductwork even when the motor is outside. Note whether the noise occurs on every speed, changes when a door or window opens, or started after filters were refitted.
Safe checks from the kitchen
Switch the rangehood off and let it stop before touching user-removable filters. Clean and reinstall them exactly as directed, making sure catches engage. Look for a loose light cover or obvious object at the filter opening, but never reach into the fan.
Poor extraction and extra noise together can indicate restricted filters, an obstructed outlet or unsuitable ducting. Duct and roof access should be handled safely; do not climb or dismantle a remote motor enclosure.
- Rattle: filter, cover or mounting may be loose

- Whistling: airflow restriction or duct geometry may be involved
- Hum without airflow: motor or control diagnosis is needed
Why motor type matters
Canopy motors, in-line motors and external roof or wall motors use different mounting, controls and access. The correct replacement cannot be chosen from canopy width alone. Model, motor identifier and installation photos help.

When to book a visit
Arrange service if noise is worsening, the fan stalls, controls behave erratically, airflow has dropped sharply, or there is an electrical smell. Isolate the appliance and stop using it for grinding, smoke or electrical tripping.
