If you smell gas, stop
Turn burners off, avoid flames and electrical switches, ventilate if safe, and follow your gas supplier’s emergency instructions. A strong or persistent gas smell is not an ignition troubleshooting exercise.
For an electrical spark issue without a gas smell, switch the cooktop off at its accessible isolation point before cleaning. Do not work beneath the glass or remove the appliance from the bench.
Common causes after spills or cleaning
Moisture around an igniter can cause repeated clicking. Once isolated and cool, remove only the burner pieces designed for routine cleaning, dry them thoroughly and refit each cap in its correct seated position. A cap that sits crooked can deflect the flame or prevent ignition.
Food residue can obstruct the small burner ports. Clean only as the user manual directs and avoid enlarging holes with improvised tools. Check that the igniter ceramic is not visibly cracked, but do not bend the electrode.

Components that need professional testing
Persistent faults may involve the spark module, ignition switches, wiring, flame-failure device, gas valve or burner assembly. Gas pressure and combustion concerns require the right licence and test equipment; adjusting shutters or valves by eye is unsafe.
Tell the technician whether the problem began after a spill, affects one or all burners, and whether the flame stays lit after the knob is released. Those details make the visit more focused.
